Zafar Syed is a multifaceted author and scholar working at the intersection of literature, history, and science. With a portfolio of ten books, he writes with equal fluency in English and Urdu.
His literary contributions are marked by a series of “firsts” and ambitious undertakings. He is the author of Evolutionary Criticism, a groundbreaking work that is the first of its kind in Urdu literature. In this book, Zafar merges his scientific background with literary analysis, practically applying the theory of Darwinian evolution to dissect world and Urdu fiction. Equally ambitious is his two-volume Urdu translation of Jorge Luis Borges, a monumental feat that successfully rendered the labyrinthine complexity of the Argentine master for a new audience.
His fiction is equally pioneering. His acclaimed Urdu novel, Gulmina, was the first to address the harrowing reality of the tribal areas along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Through the lens of a woman whose life is shattered by conflict, the novel posits a haunting truth: while war claims men in an instant, it is the women left behind who bear the enduring scars. An English translation, The Dark Side of Paradise, is forthcoming. His debut novel, Aadhi Raat ka Suraj (2013), is an experimental tapestry of history and travelogue set in Muslim Spain.
Beyond books, Zafar is a prolific essayist and public speaker, frequently lecturing on the intersections of history, neurology, and philosophy. His work explores profound themes such as the nature of consciousness, free will, artificial intelligence, and humanism.
